“THIRD SIDE” MEDIATION SEMINARS FOR STUDENTS
“...our students are eagerly awaiting the next visit of our dear colleagues... Listening to their life experiences almost made me feel like I was there myself. The terror of a nuclear strike warning, the thrill of the Russian-American talks in the 80s. All this seemed so close, so personal.”
--Pasha Gavryo, Student, Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO)
“This meeting will be long remembered and l deeply thank our guests for coming!"
-- Darya Ivanova, MGIMO student
“Your seminar was a real master class…”
--Gleb Samoilov, President, Negotiation Club, MGIMO
Cynthia and Bruce Allyn have developed seminars on how to apply “Third Side” mediation tools to current tough challenges in US-Russian relations. With the inspiration and participation of mediation expert William Ury, they approach the conflict from the perspective of what Ury has termed the “Third Side” – a way of looking at the conflict not just from one side or the other but from the larger perspective of the surrounding community whose lives are affected by the conflict— people, whose lives, in the case of the escalating U.S.-Russian nuclear arms race, are in real jeopardy.
You can have natural sympathies for one side or the other and still choose to take the "Third Side", which means seeking to understand both sides of the conflict, encouraging a process of cooperative negotiation, and supporting a wise solution – one that fairly meets the essential needs of both sides and the community. More on the “Third Side.”
Cynthia and Bruce have held seminars for students at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, the University Consortium at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), and the Russian National University Higher School of Economics and other locations. William Ury has joined portions of seminars in person or by live video stream.
